Steps that are built onto second-story decks are not only costly, but they are the least attractive feature of a deck. As a result, we typically try to tuck steps onto the side of a deck where they will be less visible. This is also wise when considering traffic patterns since you don’t want to walk around tables and chairs to get to the steps.
On-grade decks present an entirely different scenario, one in which we can incorporate steps into the design of the deck, giving them an aesthetic quality. Wider steps help make the yard and the deck become one space, wider steps don’t define a specific spot where you have to walk off the deck, and wider steps can be an additional place to sit, which is useful when entertaining larger groups of people. Steps are also an ideal location to install low-voltage lighting.
